What is Greenwashing?
Greenwashing is an advertising gimmick used to attract more customers by appearing eco-friendly, rather than actually adopting practices to be eco-friendly. These companies spend both time and money on their PR and advertisements to make it look like they are doing their part to help our planet when in reality, they’re not making any sustainable changes.
What Does Greenwashing Look Like?
Greenwashing is used in many companies such as fast fashion brands. Another example is Starbucks, in 2018, Starbucks released a straw-less lid which appeared to be a great way to reduce plastic. Unfortunately, the new lid actually had more plastic in it than the previous straw and lid which had a more negative impact on the environment.
Coca-Cola is ranked the worst plastic polluter in the world even after advertising that they are a sustainable company. The Earth Island Institute filed a lawsuit against Coca-Cola after they claimed they were a sustainable company.
Nestle also follows behind Coca-Cola by being one of the worst plastic polluting companies in the world. The food company claimed that they had ‘ambitions’ to become 100% recyclable by 2025, however, it has been shown that the company has made little effort to do this, proving that it was just a front.
How Can your Company Really Become Greener?
The best way to introduce environmental practices into your company is by becoming ISO 14001 certified. This standard not only ensures that your company is introducing eco-friendly processes into your company but the certification proves that you are doing it too, no greenwashing around here!
What is ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management and specifies requirements for an Environmental Management System. It is used by businesses globally to improve their environmental performance and demonstrate their commitment to the environment. The standard can apply to any business, regardless of its size, sector, or activities.
